For three years we tested a series of titanium prototypes looking for the right formula for a rigid 29 inch wheeled mountain bike, torn between the rolling momentum of the 9er wheel and snappy acceleration of the 26 inch wheel. We found a way to more than take advantage of both. We ended up with a "convertible" that can morph from a balanced CrossRoad skinny tired 700c rig into an off-road 69er with 2.55 tires with geometry and solid construction that competes with the very best mountain bikes out there, rigid or suspended. The Dreamride White Rim is a remarkable idea, borrowing from 2nd World War British Paratrooper bikes, current cyclocross designs, and mating the two in such a way that you get either with a simple wheel swap. Our home of Moab, Utah, with its legendary rough trails, is demanding of a mountain bike. A rigid bike has to be very sturdy to be able to handle repeated technical situations Moab terrain constantly presents. This is purely a design from the mind of Lee Bridgers, Dreamride owner. He comes into contact with riders amazed at the White Rim's abilities in hardcore off-road situations WITHOUT suspension. It is amazingly agile and flickable at slow speeds while remaining rock stable at higher speeds. Its front tire rolls over everything in its way and that rear wheel, built with a Mavic 729 downhill rim to further fatten the lightweight WTB Weirwolf 2.55 tire, accelerates with the best 26 inch wheeled hardtails. The full-blown off-road set-up handles just about every kind of terrain short of freeride drops, and is light and fast enough on roads to entice you to ride to trails without use of fossil fuels. With a narrow and light set of cross wheels (and the option for a bar swap), it becomes the ulimate commuter and a smooth, tight trail bike or cyclocross racer, surprisingly capable and extremely natural in most urban and some technical off-road conditions. Dreamride White Rim Ti 69er We can use On-One Mary Bars (or the Soma copy) for comfort and ergonomics. These bars offer excellent handling response in technical off-road conditions with a relaxed wrist angle necessary on any rigid bike built to take on big bumps. The front wheel rolls over just about everything. The slack head angle resulting from the 26/29 combo helps eliminate shock at the handlebar and further saves the wrists and elbows, while still maintaining quick handling in tight stuff. This is certainly the best set up for desert riding over hills and in the mountains, facilitating more body and hand positions while climbing and cruising. Long chainstays facilitate a more upright seated position on steep climbs, allowing the rider to sit or stand with complete handling control. Our first choice for the fork is a Pace with carbon wrapped titanium legs, aluminum steer and magnesium crown and dropouts. There are other fork choices, but this bike stays rigid--no suspension allowed. Suspension ruins the White Rim's pefect geometry. We can customize bikes of similar design with suspension forks and/or suspension rear ends by manipulating Moots' models, the Zirkel, Mooto-X or YBB. See our builds of MOOTS bikes for ideas along this line that feature suspension. White Rim CrossRoad coversion The road commuter set up of the same frame is instantly a hit with anyone who has been turned off by road riding due to classic road bike design. Disc brakes, slacker angles and lower gears turn a road bike into an ANYWHERE bike. It can be a tourer, commuter or a cross racing bike. Flat bars with bar ends offer the best cockpit in "city" mode.
